WHY read the Bible?

There are endless reasons to read the Bible, but my Top 10 are:

  1. Discover the Truth (John 8:32)Unfortunately, there are a lot of people spreading inaccurate and incomplete information about what the Bible says and the only way you will know the truth is to read the Bible yourself.
  2. Seek God – The Bible was written for everyone and God will reveal Himself to anyone through His Word who seeks Him wholeheartedly (Jeremiah 29:13).
  3. Know God – Imagine that your earthly father could only communicate with you in writing.  You would cherish those letters, read every word and read them again and again.  As a Christian, the writings in the Bible are your Heavenly Father’s letters to you and by reading His letters, you will know Him.  The more you read the Bible, the better you will know God and His plan for your life.
  4. Defend your Beliefs – If you say you believe the Bible, you should know what it really says.  If you don’t believe the Bible, you should read it to know why you disagree with it, but don’t expect to be able to understand it completely without the help of God’s Spirit (1Corinthians 2:14).
  5. Discover Your Purpose – You were designed by God with unique qualities and talents and He has a purpose for your life that will satisfy the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).
  6. Receive your Inheritance and Prosper – The Bible is the Last Will and Testament of God, and Christians are joint heirs with Jesus, the Christ, so read it to find out what you have inherited (Romans 8:16-17).  Those who meditate on God’s Word prosper in everything they do (Psalm 1:2-3).
  7. Resolve Morality Issues – All of the moral issues we have today were present during Biblical times — adultery, deception, disease, divorce, drunkenness, greed, homosexuality, incest, murder, prostitution, rape, slavery, etc.  Jesus died to save us from these sins and those who believe in Him have the Holy Spirit to empower them to overcome every evil tendency.
  8. Know the Past – The past shaped the present, so understanding the past can give you perspective on the present and help you position yourself for the future.
  9. Understand Current Events – The Bible sheds light on the current tension in the Middle East.  You can’t turn on the TV these days without seeing something about Israel, Iran, Egypt, Iraq (Babylon) and the rest of the Middle East.  Israel and especially Jerusalem is a sacred site for Muslims, Jews and Christians.  The Bible will help you understand why Israel is so important.
  10. Prepare for Future Events –The Bible says that false prophets will deceive people by performing miracles and that there will be famine, epidemics, wars, natural disasters, etc. (Matthew 24).  The Bible tells you everything you need to know to prepare for the future.  The Bible also explains death, Heaven, Hell, and more.  For more information about the future, refer to the “End Times Summary” in Section Three:  Bonus Pieces.
